Your immune system is a relentless search-and-destroy machine that, fortunately, is currently oblivious to your eyeballs. There is a physical barrier keeping your white blood cells from ever "seeing" your eyes. To your body’s defense force, your retinas are essentially unregistered aliens living in your skull.

If a traumatic injury breaks that seal, the secret is out. Your immune system finally notices these "foreign" objects and immediately tries to delete them. It’s a charming biological design flaw: your own body will happily blind you because it simply doesn't realize your eyes belong to you.

So if one eye is punctured, does the other one go blind too?

Precisely. It is called sympathetic ophthalmia, though the term is far too poetic for such a clinical execution. Once white blood cells sample the "forbidden" proteins leaking from a ruptured eye, they catalog that tissue as a threat.

What occurs if that protective wall around the brain actually collapses?

Your systemic immune system would treat your neurons like a buffet of foreign invaders. It has no concept of "self" regarding the brain; it simply identifies unfamiliar proteins and initiates a scorched-earth campaign to purge the perceived intruder.

This mechanical failure is the basis for conditions like Multiple Sclerosis. Your defense force strips the insulation off your nerves, effectively short-circuiting your hardware because it doesn't realize it is dismantling the very machine it was built to protect.

How does a microscopic 'wall' actually keep out an entire army?

The 'wall' is the Blood-Brain Barrier, a specialized layer of cells lining your cerebral blood vessels. These cells are knit together by "tight junctions," creating a biological filter that permits oxygen while obstructing the clumsy, destructive cells of your immune system.

This barrier fails when inflammation or trauma compromises those cellular seals. It is not a dramatic crumbling of stone, but a microscopic loosening of the gate. Once the first white blood cell slips through, the brain's status as a "protected" zone is permanently revoked.
