You are currently pickling yourself from the inside out. Every time your cells process nutrients or flip a genetic switch, they produce formaldehyde as a byproduct.

This is the exact same chemical used to preserve lab frogs and embalm corpses. It's a violent toxin that loves to shred your DNA.

You're only alive because your body is in a frantic, 24/7 race to neutralize this internal exhaust before it dissolves you. You are essentially a walking chemistry accident.

So how does the body actually stop this stuff from melting us?

You possess a specialized cleanup crew of enzymes that function like a high-speed garbage disposal. They intercept the formaldehyde molecules the millisecond they emerge, chemically dismantling them into a harmless substance called formate.

It is a relentless, automated assembly line. If these enzymes paused for even a few seconds, the formaldehyde would begin cross-linking your proteins, effectively turning your internal organs into stiff, leathery plastic.

You remain blissfully unaware of this because the system is efficient. You are a biological disaster zone with an exceptionally high-functioning janitorial staff.

Wait, what happens if these janitor enzymes actually fail to show up?

If your microscopic janitors go on strike, the results are catastrophic. Without them, formaldehyde begins its favorite hobby: fusing your DNA strands together like a clumsy child with a hot glue gun.

Why does the marrow collapse first while the rest of me survives?

Your bone marrow is a frantic industrial zone, churning out millions of blood cells every second. It is a high-speed printing press that never stops.

When formaldehyde glues the DNA, the press jams. Brain cells can sit around for decades, but marrow is in a constant state of self-replication. It must read its blueprints constantly to keep the lights on.

Is my brain safe then, since it isn't in a hurry to divide?

"Safe" is a relative term when you're talking about internal embalming. While your neurons aren't busy copying DNA, they are still packed with proteins that formaldehyde loves to weld together.

Instead of a sudden manufacturing halt, your brain experiences a gradual thickening. It's less like a factory jam and more like your cognitive hardware slowly turning into a block of resin.

You aren't immune; you're just on a slower schedule. The marrow is a frantic explosion; the brain is a long, quiet curing process.
