You are currently inhaling an invisible blizzard of fungal spores. They drift through the air like microscopic dandelion seeds, searching for a damp, dark place to call home.

To a spore, your lungs are a high-end buffet. They land on your moist tissue, ready to sprout filaments and start the process of decomposition while you’re still using the body.

You only remain intact because your immune system is a tireless janitor, dissolving these invaders before they can take root. You are essentially a walking compost pile that stubbornly refuses to break down.

Wait, what happens if the janitor decides to take a permanent break?

The moment your "janitor" clocks out—meaning your immune system fails—the truce is over. Without white blood cells patrolling the hallways, the spores stop being guests and start being the renovation crew.

Within hours, they sprout microscopic roots called hyphae, threading through your tissues like weeds through a cracked sidewalk. You stop being a person and officially become a nutrient-dense substrate.

It’s not personal; you’re just a very efficient pile of fuel that finally stopped fighting back. The fungi have been waiting for this vacancy since your first breath.

How do these tiny threads actually dissolve something as tough as muscle?

Fungi lack the courtesy of a mouth, so they digest you in the open. They secrete a cocktail of enzymes directly onto your tissues, melting your structure from the outside in.

It’s like pouring industrial drain cleaner onto a steak. Your proteins and fats lose their integrity, breaking down into a convenient slurry of sugars and amino acids.

Once you’re sufficiently liquified, the hyphae soak up the results like a sponge. You aren't being eaten; you're simply being absorbed into the fungal collective.

Why doesn't that corrosive slime melt the fungus's own body as well?

Fungi are not prone to self-destruction. Their bodies are built from chitin, the same tough stuff found in lobster shells. It’s essentially a biological hazmat suit that's immune to their own digestive spit.

The enzymes they spit out are specialized to break down animal flesh and gristle. Since the fungus is made of different building blocks, it stays solid while your tissues turn into a puddle.

It’s just efficient chemistry. You are the only one on the menu; the fungus is just the waiter.

Does that mean dead fungi just clutter up the planet forever?

Nature doesn't tolerate a cluttered floor. While chitin is a formidable barrier against your basic digestive juices, it isn't invincible; it just requires a different set of tools.

A separate class of microbes and specialized fungi carry chitinase, an enzyme specifically evolved to crack those lobster-like shells. They wait for the primary decomposer to expire, then move in to dismantle the dismantler.

It’s a recursive loop of scavenging. In the end, every biological hazmat suit eventually leaks, and the waiter becomes the next course for a smaller, more patient diner.
