Imagine if every time you swallowed a big bite of food, you risked a literal concussion. That’s the life of a giant squid, whose brain is shaped like a donut wrapped tightly around its throat.

Because the esophagus runs right through the center of their "thinking ring," these deep-sea monsters have a strict size limit on lunch. If they swallow something too large or spiky, it can actually scrape against their brain or cause a fatal injury.

It’s one of evolution’s most chaotic design flaws. They can grow as long as a bus, but one over-ambitious snack could literally scramble their circuits.

So how do they eat anything substantial without accidentally stabbing their own brain?

They have a built-in food processor. Before that snack ever touches the "brain-donut," it has to pass through a terrifying beak that looks like a parrot’s, but way sharper.

Inside that beak is a radula—basically a tongue covered in tiny, serrated teeth. They don't just "swallow" a fish; they grind it into a fine, mushy paste.

It’s like nature gave them a high-end blender because it knew their plumbing was a total disaster. They have to eat like they’re sipping a smoothie just to stay conscious.

Wait, their tongue is actually a biological chainsaw?

Exactly. The radula is essentially a biological belt sander. It’s a flexible ribbon of tissue lined with rows of tiny, hooked teeth made of chitin—the same rugged material found in crab shells.

Instead of chewing, the squid uses this "tongue-saw" to rasp at its prey. It moves back and forth at high speeds, grinding fish into a liquid pulp.

It’s a brutal survival hack. Since their plumbing is so precarious, they’ve evolved to be the deep sea's most intense liquid-diet specialists, ensuring no sharp bones ever poke their fragile neural ring.

But what happens to the crunchy bones if they can only swallow soup?

They’re basically the world’s most aggressive picky eaters. If a piece of bone or shell is too stubborn to be pulverized into a "squid smoothie," they simply spit it out.

The beak does the heavy lifting first, snipping off the prime cuts. Then the radula acts like a high-speed sander. If the sander hits something it can't break down, the squid just rejects the "trash" before it ever gets near the brain-tunnel.

It’s a high-maintenance lifestyle. They spend a lot of energy making sure their dinner is perfectly pureed, because one stray fish rib is basically a lobotomy.

Does that brain-tunnel actually get squished when the esophagus expands?

It’s as tight a fit as it looks. The neural ring is a literal bottleneck. Even with pureed food, a massive gulp causes the esophagus to swell and physically compress the surrounding brain tissue.

To survive, the squid has a built-in pressure sensor. If they swallow too much, the squeeze triggers a reflex to stop eating. It’s like a headache that acts as a mandatory diet coach.

It’s a bizarre trade-off. They have complex nervous systems for hunting, yet they’re physically bullied by their own lunch. They can’t pig out without dinner literally crowding their thoughts.
