The Greenland shark is the ultimate late bloomer, and honestly, its commitment to doing absolutely nothing is impressive. While most creatures are rushing to reproduce and die, this shark spends its first 150 years just chilling. It doesn't even hit puberty until it's a century and a half old.

Imagine being a teenager from the time of the American Civil War until today. Because they live in near-freezing Arctic water, their metabolism is permanently set to battery saver mode.

They grow about one centimeter a year, creeping through the dark at a glacial pace. It turns out that if you simply refuse to hurry, you can easily live for four centuries.

Hold on, how do scientists even prove a shark is 400 years old?

It’s not like they carry a birth certificate. Scientists actually have to peer into their eyes—literally. They use the shark's eye lenses as a biological time capsule.

Inside the lens are proteins that haven't changed since the shark was a pup. By using radiocarbon dating on these 'baby' proteins, researchers can calculate their age like they do for ancient artifacts.

They are basically the ocean's giant vacuum cleaners. They’ll scavenge almost anything—scientists have even found remains of polar bears and reindeer in their stomachs. They don't need to be fast; they just need to be patient.

It’s the ultimate 'work smarter, not harder' strategy. While other sharks burn calories chasing tuna, this guy just drifts around, waiting for a sleepy seal to basically float into its mouth like a slow-moving burrito.

Wait, how does a slow-motion shark end up eating a polar bear?

It’s not like they’re winning a wrestling match. Greenland sharks are the ultimate opportunists—basically the ocean’s cleaning crew for anything that falls through the ice.

If a polar bear drowns or a reindeer gets swept away, it’s a free buffet. They don't care if their meal is fresh; their stomachs are like industrial-strength compost bins.

It’s the perfect crime. They get a high-calorie feast without moving a muscle. In the Arctic, being a lazy scavenger is a top-tier career choice.
