I’d like to file a formal complaint against Hyperion. Most moons have the decency to spin like a top, but this jagged, sponge-shaped rock tumbles through space like a lumpy potato in a dryer.

It’s caught in a gravitational shouting match between Saturn and the moon Titan. This constant tugging, combined with its weird shape, makes its rotation completely unpredictable.

Good luck booking a hotel here. You can’t even predict where the sun will rise or how long a day lasts. It’s a navigational disaster that makes a simple sunset impossible to schedule.

Wait, why is Titan the one picking a fight with this poor moon?

Titan is the overbearing landlord of the Saturn system. It’s absolutely massive—literally bigger than the planet Mercury—and it refuses to give Hyperion any personal space.

They are locked in an orbital resonance, which is just a fancy way of saying Titan specifically schedules its flybys to yank on Hyperion at the worst possible moments. It’s like trying to balance on a ladder while a giant neighbor kicks the base every few minutes.

Because Hyperion is so light and porous, it has zero backbone to resist. It just gets bullied into a permanent state of vertigo.

Hold on, how is a moon 'porous' without just falling apart?

It’s basically the cosmic equivalent of a cheap Styrofoam cooler. Hyperion is about 40% empty space. If you dropped it in a giant bathtub, it would actually float—though the cleanup would be a nightmare.

It doesn't crumble because its gravity is just barely strong enough to hold its icy dust bunnies together, but not strong enough to crush them into a solid ball.

From a tourist perspective, it’s a structural safety violation. You’re essentially landing on a giant, frozen pile of Swiss cheese.

So if a meteor hits this giant sponge, does it just get swallowed up?

Exactly. On a normal moon, an impact is a dramatic explosion. On Hyperion, it’s just a dull thud. The surface is so fluffy that the meteor simply crushes the "foam" downward instead of blowing it out.

This leaves the moon covered in deep, jagged pits with sharp edges. It looks like a used dish scrubby that’s seen too many grease fires.

For a tourist, it’s a hiking nightmare. There’s no flat ground, just endless, steep-walled holes. It’s like the universe forgot to finish the "smoothing" phase of construction.

Could I just jump out of a pit if the gravity is that weak?

Technically, yes. With gravity this pathetic, a decent leg press could launch you hundreds of meters into the sky. You aren't so much "climbing" as you are "low-velocity drifting."

But here’s the catch: the walls of these pits are basically frozen cigarette ash. If you try to kick off a ledge to escape, the ground will just disintegrate under your boots. It’s like trying to parkour on a birthday cake.

You’d be stuck in a slow-motion struggle, flailing around while your "ladder" turns into dust. It’s a humiliatingly slow way to get stranded in the solar system.
