I am trying to enjoy the void, but the universe has zero respect for peace and quiet. There is this persistent, low-grade static called the Cosmic Microwave Background cluttering up every square inch of space. Imagine checking into a hotel where the hallways keep getting longer while you are walking to your room. That is the universe for you. It has been expanding for eons, and as the space itself stretches out like cheap spandex, the light traveling through it gets dragged along.
This light started as high-energy, white-hot radiation. But because the universe cannot stay a consistent size, those waves got pulled wider and wider until they lost all their energy. It didn't actually go anywhere, which is the most frustrating part of the service here. The universe just decided to get bigger. Imagine a crowded elevator where the walls suddenly start moving outward; the heat is still there, but it's spread so thin you start shivering.
As space stretched, the energy density plummeted. Those 'sweaty particles'—protons and electrons—finally lost enough energy to stop bouncing around and settled into calm, neutral atoms. This cleared the 'fog,' letting the light escape into the vast, drafty void we're stuck with today.
You’d think a 'blinding flash' would mean the universe has decent lighting, but the management here is incompetent. That light is technically everywhere, but it's been stretched into a frequency our eyes can't detect. It's like being in a room full of music pitched so low only a whale could hear it; to us, it just looks like a dark, empty basement.
We’re essentially standing in the middle of a massive, ancient explosion, but we’re seeing it in slow-motion infrared. It’s the ultimate budget cut: the universe has all the energy of a fireball, but it was too cheap to keep the visible lights on for us.
