
The 1991 'Gopher' protocol as a subterranean branch of the internet tree
Before the World Wide Web became a messy jungle of pop-ups and algorithms, there was Gopher. It was the internet’s first attempt at a global library system, organized like a clean, subterranean network of tunnels.
Instead of clicking chaotic links, you navigated through strict, nested menus—like opening a series of digital drawers to find a specific file. It was fast, text-only, and completely focused on the information itself without any visual distractions.
It actually almost won the internet wars of the early 90s. But while Gopher stayed rigid and orderly, the Web embraced the chaos of images and hyperlinking, leaving this elegant underground system to become a quiet, hidden relic for digital archeologists.
It came down to a classic 'extinction event' triggered by greed. In 1993, the University of Minnesota, where Gopher was born, suddenly announced they might charge companies to use the protocol.
Imagine if someone tried to charge you a subscription just to use the concept of a 'folder.' It spooked the early pioneers. They didn't want to build their digital homes on rented land that could get more expensive at any moment.
At the exact same time, the creators of the World Wide Web did the opposite: they gave the technology away for free to everyone. Developers flocked to the 'free' jungle, and the Gopher tunnels were abandoned almost overnight.
That would be Tim Berners-Lee and his team at CERN, the massive particle physics lab in Switzerland. They weren't looking to become tech billionaires; they just wanted a better way for scientists to share research data across different computers.
Berners-Lee realized that for a web to actually work, it had to be infinite. If you charge people to enter the forest, they’ll just stay on the road. He convinced CERN to release the source code into the public domain for free.
By choosing 'free' over 'fees,' they turned the Web into a global commons. It was the digital equivalent of inventing the wheel and refusing to patent it so everyone could build wagons.
It sounds like a weird side quest, but CERN was the ultimate data factory. They were smashing particles together and generating mountains of information that thousands of scientists worldwide needed to see at once.
Before the Web, if a physicist in Japan wanted to see a chart from a computer in Switzerland, it was a technical nightmare. Berners-Lee basically built a 'universal translator' so these different machines could finally speak the same language.
The Web wasn't born to host cat videos; it was a high-tech SOS system for scientists drowning in data. It was the only way to keep their global brain connected.
Berners-Lee hated rigid hierarchies. In a library, you follow a fixed path—section, shelf, book. He wanted something organic, where any idea could instantly leap to any other, no matter how far apart they lived.
Imagine a map where every city has a direct portal to every other city. When you connect millions of documents this way, the structure stops looking like a neat grid and starts looking like a tangled thicket of silk.
He almost called it 'Information Mesh.' He chose 'Web' instead because it perfectly captured this non-linear, messy, and beautiful sprawl of human thought.
