We would wait ten minutes just to see a grainy, postage-stamp-sized clip. It was a primitive ritual of patience that modern high-speed brains have completely evolved away from.
Think of those copper wires as a narrow dirt path originally carved out just for the human voice. When we tried to shove video through them, we were essentially trying to march an entire army down a trail meant for a single hiker.
The technology, called dial-up, converted digital data into audible sounds—those screeching, hissing noises you’d hear when connecting. Because it had to stay within the same frequency range as a phone call, the 'bandwidth' was physically restricted.

In this fragile ecosystem, the copper wire was a shared burrow. If a human picked up the physical handset, they were essentially dropping a sonic boom into a quiet library.
Because the modems were squatting on the same audio frequencies used for human speech, the sudden 'click' and dial tone sounded like a catastrophic explosion to the machines. They simply couldn't filter out the intruder.
