In the late 90s, AOL staged the most aggressive land grab in history, and they did it through your mailbox. At one point, half of all CDs manufactured on Earth had an AOL logo on them. It was digital carpet bombing.

They weren't just selling software; they were colonizing your desk. By turning a piece of plastic into a "free" gateway, they made the terrifying "Information Superhighway" feel as domestic as a pizza coupon. It was the first time a company treated your physical home as a frontier for digital expansion.

Wait, where did those billions of plastic 'fossils' actually end up?

Imagine a geological layer made entirely of shiny polycarbonate. Since they were free and everywhere, these "specimens" became the most versatile trash in human history.

People used them as drink coasters, frisbees, or even strung them together to scare birds away from gardens. They were an invasive species that people tried to domesticate through DIY crafts.

Eventually, the vast majority migrated to landfills, forming a literal plastic crust of the late 90s. It was the first time our digital ambitions left such a massive, physical scar on the planet.

Wait, does that mean these discs will outlast the internet itself?

Pretty much. While the internet is a flickering pulse of electricity, these discs are stubborn physical anchors. A standard CD is made of polycarbonate plastic and a thin layer of aluminum. In a dry landfill, that plastic skeleton is estimated to survive for nearly a thousand years.

Long after the servers hosting your old photos have rusted into dust, these AOL discs will still be chilling in the dirt. They are the ultimate offline backup—a permanent record of a 56k era that refused to go quietly into the night.

Could a future archaeologist actually play one of these in a millennium?

Sadly, the plastic shell is a liar. While the polycarbonate body is immortal, the "soul" of the disc—the data—is incredibly fragile. It relies on a microscopic layer of aluminum that hates oxygen.

If even a tiny bit of air leaks through the plastic, the metal "rusts" or oxidizes. This is called "disc rot." In a few decades, the data turns into a transparent ghost, leaving the future explorer with a very durable, very blank coaster.

Why did they choose such a 'rust-prone' metal to protect our data?

It wasn't about building a time capsule; it was about the bottom line. Aluminum was the cheapest way to create the mirror-finish that a CD player's laser needs to bounce off of to read the bits.

Gold was actually the premium alternative because it never oxidizes, but when you're carpet-bombing the world with free software, you don't use jewelry-grade materials. You use the soda-can equivalent.

We traded long-term survival for immediate scale. It was a massive sprint to colonize the early web, even if the ships we sent were built to dissolve in the rain.
