In 1988, the internet was a quiet, academic neighborhood until Robert Morris released the first digital "invasive species." It wasn't a weapon; it was more like a stray cat that cloned itself every time it blinked.

The Morris Worm was meant to just wander and count computers. But a tiny logic flaw turned it into a plague. It would ask a server if it was already "occupied," then ignore the answer and force a new copy inside anyway.

Within hours, the early web was gasping for air. Thousands of copies crowded the systems, proving that a digital organism doesn't need teeth to be a predator—it just needs to overstay its welcome.

Wait, why bother asking if it was just going to break in anyway?

Morris was trying to outsmart the "immune systems" of the early web. He feared admins would create fake "occupied" signals to trick his creation, much like a virus evolving to ignore a cell's warning proteins.

He hard-coded a stubborn streak: the worm would ignore the "no" and force its way in one out of every seven times. It was a survival tactic meant to guarantee total coverage across the network.

But this stubbornness backfired. In the high-speed ecosystem of the 80s ARPANET, that 14% chance of forced entry triggered a population explosion that choked the very hosts it needed to survive.

How does a computer actually 'choke' just from having too many copies?

In this digital wilderness, 'choking' isn't about physical damage; it’s about resource exhaustion. Imagine a computer's processor as a frantic librarian trying to handle one book at a time.

The worm copies act like a flash mob. Thousands of them rush the desk at once, all demanding the librarian’s attention. The librarian starts spinning in circles, trying to help everyone but finishing nothing.

This is 'thrashing.' The system spends 100% of its power just managing the crowd of clones, leaving zero energy for actual life functions until the whole machine simply freezes in place.

If the whole machine is frozen, how do you even fight back?

When a system hits total paralysis, you can't just click "cancel." The librarian is completely incapacitated. The only way to break the spell is a hard reset—the digital equivalent of a tranquilizer dart.

In the 1988 outbreak, admins had to perform manual "surgeries." They literally pulled the network cables out of the walls to quarantine their systems before the worm could hop to the next machine.

By cutting the power, they cleared the librarian's desk entirely. It forced the system to wake up in a clean, empty room, giving humans a few precious seconds to patch the holes before the mob returned.

So how do you even share the cure if the internet is literally dead?

In this pre-wifi era, the cure couldn't just be "downloaded." Admins relied on "sneakernet"—literally running between buildings with magnetic tapes and floppy disks.

They used landline phones to dictate lines of code to colleagues across the country, treating the telephone like a survival radio in a digital blackout.
