While your roses wait for a drink, the privet’s roots are busy staging a heist. It weaves a thick, matted carpet of fine roots just under the surface, acting like a high-speed sponge.

It grabs every drop of rain before it can sink an inch. This ruthless underground monopoly leaves the soil bone-dry, starving out any neighbor foolish enough to plant nearby.

If those roots are so shallow, why doesn't the whole hedge just topple?

You’d think so, wouldn’t you? But the privet is a crafty old devil. That surface mat is just its "feeding" system—the front-line troops meant to intercept the rain.

Underneath that carpet, it sends down thick, woody "anchor" roots that act like heavy-duty tent pegs. It’s essentially a two-tier defense system.

While the fine roots are busy stealing your roses' tea, the big ones are gripping the subsoil like a vice. It's like trying to rip up floorboards bolted to the foundations.

How do you even begin to dig out a hedge that's bolted down?

As long as that signal is flowing, the buds stay quiet. But the moment you lop the head off, the supply vanishes. It’s like the factory siren failing to go off.

Without that 'stay asleep' order, every single bud in the root system assumes it’s now in charge. They all wake up at once and start building new stems.
