Imagine planning a nice July picnic only for a volcano 8,000 miles away to cancel summer entirely. In 1816, Mount Tambora erupted and choked the atmosphere with so much ash and sulfur that it acted like a giant, unwanted parasol.

This volcanic winter blocked out the sun's warmth, turning June into a freezing, grey mess. It was the ultimate ruined bank holiday, lasting a whole year.
