
The way 'isostatic rebound' makes the coastline slowly rise
Think of the Earth's crust like a surfboard with a massive, heavy grommet sitting on it. During the ice age, those monster glaciers were like lead weights, pushing the land deep into the mantle's "syrup."
Now that the ice has melted, the land is finally catching a break. It’s slowly popping back up to find its balance, a move called isostatic rebound.
It’s no quick snap, though. The ground rises just a few millimeters a year, like a slow-motion bobber returning to the surface after a heavy wipeout.
Spot on, mate. It's like the tide is going out forever. As the land lifts, you're basically rising above the water, making the shoreline creep further and further away from the old dunes.
In some parts of the world, old docks are now sitting high and dry in the middle of grassy fields. The 'lineup' has shifted so far out that the sea is just a distant memory for those old piers. It's like a permanent low tide.
You’ve got a sharp eye for the flow, mate. When the glaciers pushed the land down, they squeezed the mantle out to the sides, creating a "forebulge." It’s like the bulge that forms around your hips when you sit on a squishy beanbag.
Now that the center is popping back up, those side ripples are collapsing. While the north is rising, places further down the coast are actually sinking back into the sea.
It’s a global seesaw. The Earth is just trying to level out its volume. For every beach that grows, another one is slowly losing the battle to the rising tide.
Take a look at the US East Coast, especially around the Chesapeake Bay. While the heavy ice was crushing Canada, it shoved the land around Virginia and Maryland up into a high ridge.
Now that the pressure is off up north, that ridge is flattening out like a punctured inflatable. The land there is literally dropping back down into the mantle, making it look like the sea is swallowing the shore whole.
It’s a rough ride for the locals. They’re getting hit from both sides—the land is sinking while the sea level is rising. It’s like trying to paddle out against a massive set that just won't quit.
It’s not a quick wipeout, mate. The Earth’s mantle is thick and gooey, like a jar of honey. It takes thousands of years for that "syrup" to flow back under the sinking ridge.
This slow-motion drain started 20,000 years ago and still has a few millennia to go. It stops once the land finds its "natural trim"—back where it sat before the ice age.
Until then, those coastal towns are just riding a very slow, downward wave.
