Also, it preserves shapes. When you zoom into Google Maps, your street corners still look like 90-degree angles. On a 'size-accurate' map, your neighborhood would look like it’s melting into a puddle of cheese near the poles.
We keep the lie because the geometric truth is just too jagged to fit on a smartphone screen.
