You’re strolling along, looking sharp, when a dodgy paving slab decides to ruin your morning. It’s the ultimate urban trap, lying in wait like a muddy seesaw.

When your heel hits one edge, you become a human piston. That heavy stone slams down on a hidden pool of rainwater trapped in the hollow space underneath.

Since water can’t be squashed, it panics and hunts for the quickest exit. It jets through the narrow gap at high speed, turning a tiny puddle into a targeted liquid missile aimed straight for your trousers.

Hang on, why can't you just squash water like a sponge?

Think of it like a packed Tube carriage at rush hour. Air is like a half-empty bus; you can always shove more people in because there’s loads of legroom between them. You can squeeze air into a tiny space because it’s mostly just emptiness.

But water? The molecules are already shoulder-to-shoulder, sweating on each other. There’s basically no 'empty' space left to squeeze into. You can push as hard as you like, but those molecules aren't budging an inch closer.

Because they refuse to be compressed, that energy from your foot has to go somewhere else. Since the water won't shrink, it panics and bolts sideways through the gaps at high speed, right onto your ankles.

If it won't budge, is that why a belly flop hurts so much?

Spot on. When you belly flop, you’re hitting that packed crowd we talked about at high speed. Because those molecules can’t squash down, they have to scramble out of your way instantly to make room for you.

But moving takes time. If you smack the surface flat and fast, the water doesn't have a chance to shove its mates aside. For a split second, it acts like a solid brick wall rather than a liquid.

The water pushes back just as hard as you hit it, leaving you with a very red, very sore torso. It’s basically physics giving you a slap for being clumsy.

Wait, is that why divers make themselves pointy instead of flat?

Exactly. It’s all about crowd control. Instead of trying to barge through the pub front door all at once like a belly-flopping melon, a diver leads with a point to 'pick the lock'.

By hitting the water with just their fingertips, they only ask a tiny handful of molecules to move at first. It’s a wedge. Once that small hole is opened, the rest of the body just slides through the gap.

It gives those stubborn molecules that split second to shove their mates aside. No 'brick wall' effect, no red belly, just a clean entry and a smug walk to the showers.

Does that 'pointy' wedge trick still work if you fall from a plane?

Not a chance, mate. There’s a speed limit to how fast those molecules can actually move. If you’re falling from a plane, you’re hitting the surface at over 120mph.

Think of a revolving door. If you walk through, it spins fine. But if you sprint at it full pelt, you’ll just headbutt the glass before it can budge.

At that speed, the water can't get out of the way. Your 'wedge' fails because you're hitting molecules faster than they can clear a path. It's less of a dive and more of a high-speed collision with a concrete floor.
