
The way a 'deflection' sends a football the wrong way
Imagine your striker hits an absolute worldie, destined for the top bins. Then, it clips a defender’s shin and suddenly the keeper is diving at thin air while the ball trickles into the opposite corner. Absolute shambles.
It’s a high-speed redirection. When that spinning ball hits a solid surface, it doesn't stop; it bounces off at a new angle. Think of it like a car hitting a guardrail—the momentum gets hijacked and shoved in a fresh direction.
Even a tiny graze changes the "exit path" entirely. The ball’s energy is looking for the path of least resistance, and unfortunately, that path usually leads straight into the net.
Think of it like a long-range pass. If you’re off by just one degree at the start, by the time that ball travels thirty yards, it’s ended up in the car park instead of on your winger's boot.
It’s all about the geometry. When the ball is moving at 70mph, even a microscopic nudge gets magnified over distance. That tiny deflection at the edge of the box becomes a massive five-yard gap by the time it reaches the goal line.
The keeper is already set for the original line. When that path shifts even a fraction, his brain simply can't recalculate the new trajectory in time. It’s basically a high-speed math problem that ruins your weekend.
If you wait, you’ve already lost. The ball reaches the goal in half a second—about two blinks of an eye. Your brain can't process the info fast enough to start a dive from standstill.
Keepers rely on anticipation. They read the striker’s hips to start moving before the ball is halfway there. You have to commit early to have any hope of reaching the corner.
A deflection is a total bait and switch. You’re committed left, but the ball is now bobbling right. You’re left hanging in mid-air like a total lemon, completely helpless.
It’s all about the 'swing.' To generate power, a striker has to plant their non-kicking foot and rotate their pelvis. If those hips are wide open, they’re almost certainly aiming for the far post. It’s basic body geometry.
Think of it like a shopping trolley with a wonky wheel. Whichever way the frame is tilted, that’s where the whole mess is heading. The keeper is basically a human lie detector, scanning for that split-second physical 'tell' before the boot even touches leather.
You can try, but you’re fighting physics. To put real welly behind the ball, your body must be aligned. If you 'fake' the hip swing and whip it the other way last-second, you’ll likely just scuff the shot.
Your hips are the engine room. If the engine points left, the bus isn't going right. You can disguise it by looking away, but the core of your body doesn't lie.
Only proper ballers can 'wrap' a foot around the ball to change the angle silently, but they usually sacrifice power for that sneakiness.
