When the stairs stay still, that program crashes. Your body expects a shove that never comes, leaving you stumbling over nothing. It’s a total glitch in your muscle memory.

Wait, if I can clearly see it's broken, why can't I just override it?

You’d think your eyes being in charge would settle it, but your brain is like a pub with two different managers. Your conscious mind sees the stationary metal and says, "Right, it's just stairs, mate."

But your motor cortex—the bit that handles the actual walking—is a stubborn old geezer. It’s spent years associating those specific ridges and silver trim with movement. It triggers the "escalator routine" before your conscious thought even gets a word in edgeways.

It’s like trying not to flinch when someone pretends to poke your eye. You know it’s a joke, but your lizard brain has already hit the panic button before you can even think to stop it.

Your brain defaults to "act first, apologize later." It’d rather you look like a muppet on a stationary escalator than risk you falling because you didn't prep for the movement.

How does a fresh move get a VIP pass to that direct line then?

It’s all about the 'grind,' mate. When you first try something—like shifting gears—your conscious 'bureaucracy' does the heavy lifting. It’s clunky because you’re overthinking every tiny twitch.

Repeat that move enough, and your brain carves a physical path. It’s like walking across a park; do it a thousand times, and you’ve got a clear track that’s easier than the grass.

Eventually, the brain moves the file to the 'habit' folder. Once it’s in there, the motor cortex triggers it instantly. You’ve turned a manual task into an automatic reflex through sheer repetition.

Can you ever pave over that track if it's a rubbish habit?

You’re not stuck with it for life, but you can't just hit 'delete' either. Your brain doesn't really do erasers. Instead, you have to let the old path get "overgrown" by simply refusing to walk down it.

While that old track is getting weedy, you’ve got to start the grind all over again on a new one. It’s a proper battle because your brain, being a lazy sod, will always try to take the easiest, most well-worn route.

Eventually, the new path becomes the smoother ride and the old one becomes a dead end. You haven't removed the hardware; you've just rerouted the traffic.
