That brown cloud erupting from the counter isn't just a barista's bad day; it's a miniature physics rebellion. Cocoa powder is ground so fine that it treats the air like a thick soup rather than empty space.

Each tiny grain has a huge surface area compared to its weight. As it falls, the air pushes back so hard that the powder gets caught, swirling into a floating mist instead of just hitting the floor.

It’s a tug-of-war where gravity is losing to a bunch of invisible air molecules.

Wait, if gravity is losing, does that mean the powder stays up there forever?

It eventually lands, but it’s on a very slow commute. Because each grain is so tiny, its "terminal velocity"—the top speed it can fall—is basically a snail's crawl.

Think of it like trying to drop a sequin through a room full of giant, invisible exercise balls. The air molecules are constantly bumping into the cocoa, keeping it tossed upward like a beach ball at a concert.
