Look at a map of Afghanistan and you will see a weird, skinny finger poking out the side. That is the Wakhan Corridor, a 200-mile stretch of high-altitude mountains that exists solely because two empires could not play nice.

Back in the 1800s, the British and Russians were terrified of bumping into each other. To prevent a literal world war over a border dispute, they agreed to leave this narrow buffer zone between their territories so they would never actually touch.

There is even an unofficial Xinjiang Time that is two hours behind the capital. Navigating a social life there is a high-stakes game of which clock are we using. If you do not clarify, you will end up sitting alone at a restaurant for two hours like a total amateur.

How do you catch a flight when the whole region uses two clocks?

If you’re at the airport or train station, the shadow schedule vanishes. The state doesn't mess around with infrastructure. Every official departure is strictly Beijing Time. If your ticket says 09:00, you show up at 09:00 Beijing Time, even if the sun hasn't even thought about rising yet.

This forces locals to become bilingual in time. You’ll see shops with two clocks or people specifying Han time versus local time. It’s the ultimate social survival skill: always clarify which clock you're using before booking a taxi, or you’ll be standing on a deserted curb for two hours like a total rookie.
