The Theia impact and the chaotic birth of the Moon

Four and a half billion years ago, Earth was a solo act in a very violent reality show. Then, a Mars-sized planet named Theia decided to pull a total elimination move and slammed right into us at twenty-five thousand miles per hour.

This wasn't a fender bender; it was a planetary blender. The impact literally vaporized Earth’s crust, spraying a ring of molten rock into space like a cosmic glitter bomb.

Gravity eventually swept up that glowing trash and packed it into the Moon we see today. We’ve only been around for the final credits of this marathon broadcast, yet we act like we own the set.

Wait, if the crust was vaporized, how did Earth survive the blender?

Earth didn't 'survive' so much as it got a forced total-body makeover. Theia didn't just hit us; the two planets melted together into one giant, glowing puddle of lava.

We’re actually a hybrid. Most of Theia’s heavy iron core sank into our center, giving us a bigger engine, while the lighter leftovers stayed in orbit to form the Moon.

You're standing on a Frankenstein planet. Without that crash, Earth would be a tiny rock with no magnetic shield to protect us from being fried by the Sun.

So this iron 'engine' is basically a giant force field?

Exactly. It’s the ultimate security system. Because that massive iron core is spinning, it turns Earth into a giant electromagnet. It’s like we’re wearing a high-tech suit of armor.

The Sun is constantly trying to "cancel" us with solar wind—a stream of radiation that would peel off our atmosphere like a grape. Our magnetic field just shrugs and deflects it into space.

Without Theia’s core upgrade, our atmosphere would have been evicted eons ago. We’d be a bald, lifeless rock, and the "Humanity" spin-off series would have never even made it to pilot.

But what happens if this spinning iron engine ever runs out of gas?

If the core cools down and stops sloshing around, the security system goes dark. Without that motion, the electromagnet dies, and the Sun finally gets its way, stripping our atmosphere like a bully taking lunch money.

We’ve seen the 'Alternate Ending' already: it’s called Mars. Mars used to have a shield, but its engine stalled out billions of years ago. Now it’s just a frozen, irradiated desert where the only thing 'trending' is dust.

Luckily, Earth is still riding the high of that Theia impact. We’ve got enough leftover heat to keep the dynamo humming for a few more billion years before the show finally gets canceled for good.

How come Mars cooled down so much faster than Earth?

It’s a simple matter of size. In the planetary talent show, Mars is the scrawny contestant. Because it’s only about half the size of Earth, it has way less insulation to keep its internal fire burning.

Think of a shot of espresso versus a giant pot of stew. The espresso goes cold in minutes, while the stew stays scalding for hours. Mars just didn't have enough 'bulk' to trap its warmth against the freezing vacuum of space.

Once that heat leaked away, the engine stalled, the shield dropped, and the Sun turned a promising world into a cosmic cautionary tale.
