The 'Social Comparison' bias of scrolling through a rival's vacation photos

@Bruce McEvoy (Unfiltered) · June 30, 2026

You’re stuck in the nosebleeds of your own life while your rival is kicking goals in Bali. Your brain sees that vacation photo and immediately signals a massive scoreboard deficit. It’s a classic unforced error.

This is Social Comparison bias. You’re benchmarking your messy, unedited "behind-the-scenes" footage against their polished highlight reel.

It’s like comparing your team’s training fumbles to the opponent’s Grand Final trophy lift. Your brain treats their peak as the average, making your Tuesday feel like a blowout loss.

Wait, why is my brain even keeping score against someone else's life?

It’s an old-school survival tactic from the prehistoric preseason. Back in the day, being at the bottom of the social ladder wasn't just embarrassing—it was a career-ending injury.

If you weren't "keeping up" with the tribe's heavy hitters, you were the first one cut from the roster when food got scarce. Your brain is just running a legacy program designed to keep you in the starting lineup.

Evolution hasn't caught up to the fact that losing a "vacation-off" won't get you kicked out of the cave anymore. Your lizard brain still thinks every post is a trial for the grand final.

How come evolution hasn't released a patch for this glitchy legacy program yet?

Evolution moves at the speed of a glacier, not a 5G download. We’re running hardware stress-tested for 200,000 years, suddenly forced into a high-speed digital grand final in just the last decade.

Your brain is stuck on "Survival OS 1.0". In that version, being ignored meant you were dead meat. It hasn't realized that "likes" are just digital confetti, not actual survival resources.

To the lizard brain, the stakes are always life or death. It’s playing for keeps because back then, there was no "friendly" match. You were either in the squad or you were lunch.

Is there any way to manually force-quit this 'Survival OS 1.0' then?

You can’t uninstall the hardware, but you can stop falling for the fake whistles. It’s about realizing the referee in your head is hallucinating a foul that didn’t happen.

When you feel that 'ignored' sting, that’s just the old OS running a background scan. You have to manually override it by reminding your brain that your fridge is full and no lions are at the door.

With enough reality checks, you can teach your inner caveman that a lack of red heart icons isn't a death sentence. You're the coach, not the player.

But why does the 'ignored' sting feel so real if the lion isn't there?

Your brain is a bit of a drama queen. It doesn't have a dedicated 'social media' department, so it routes social rejection through the same neural circuitry as physical pain.

To your Survival OS, being left out of the group chat feels like getting tackled without pads. It’s using the 'Physical Injury' alarm because, back in the day, social exile was a death sentence.

It’s not just in your head; it’s a full-body false alarm. The pain is real, but the injury is imaginary. Your brain is just cranking the volume to 11 to make sure you don't miss the danger.
