Scientists think your stomach is literally cross-talking with your nose. When your belly stretches to its limit, the signals get messy and accidentally trip the sneeze reflex in your brainstem.

It’s a total hardware error. Your nervous system confuses being incredibly full with having a physical intruder in your nostrils. Evolution really forgot to patch this bug.

Wait, is this a rare bug or is everyone's hardware this broken?

It’s not a universal patch, but it’s definitely hard-coded into certain family lineages. It’s an autosomal dominant trait—if one parent sneezes after a steak, there’s a 50% chance your nervous system is running the same glitchy script.

Think of it as harmless bloatware. Because sneezing after a massive burrito doesn't actually stop you from surviving, evolution has zero incentive to fix the wiring. It’s the ultimate "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach.

It’s a hardware limitation. Unless you’re down for some high-risk DIY neurosurgery, you’re just going to have to accept that your body’s UI is a bit buggy.

How did the stomach's wiring get tangled with a face nerve anyway?

It’s a classic case of bad cable management during the dev phase. When you’re just an embryo, your body is essentially a tiny, folded-up lump of clay. The blueprints for your digestive tract and your facial nerves are laid down right next to each other.

As you grow and stretch out, those nerves stay bundled together like a tangled mess of Ethernet cables behind a desk. Because they share the same conduit in your brainstem, a high-voltage signal from a stuffed stomach can easily leak over into the sneezing circuit.

It’s basically electromagnetic interference, but for your biology. Your brain can’t tell where the full signal ends and the sneeze command begins.

If the cables are that messy, what else is misfiring?

The trigeminal nerve is the king of spaghetti code. It’s the same reason millions of people sneeze when they walk into bright sunlight.
