Around week six of development, three separate chunks of flesh migrate toward the center of your head and fuse. It’s a high-stakes welding job; if the biological code glitches and the timing is off by a hair, the pieces simply fail to connect, resulting in a cleft lip.

It’s a visceral reminder that we’re all just DIY kits assembled under a tight deadline, leaving a permanent "assembly required" scar right in the middle of our faces.
