Watching a rugby scrum is basically witnessing a bronze-age military tactic in short shorts. It’s a direct evolution of the Greek phalanx, where soldiers locked shields to become a single, multi-legged battering ram.

Back then, the othismos was the decisive collective shove where the back ranks pushed the front ranks forward. You weren't an individual; you were a gear in a human bulldozer.

Rugby just swapped shields for jerseys. It’s the same primal physics: whoever stays lower and binds tighter as one unit wins the ground.

Wait, if the back ranks keep pushing, doesn't the front row just get crushed?

That was the literal danger of the othismos. You weren't just pushing; you were being compressed. The front-line soldiers were essentially the meat in a bronze sandwich, held upright by the sheer density of the men behind them.

If the formation held, you were a wall. If it cracked, the 'human bulldozer' became a stampede. Some accounts suggest men were actually lifted off their feet or suffocated by the pressure of their own comrades' momentum.

Modern rugby has strict 'engage' sequences specifically to prevent this. Without those rules, the raw physics of sixteen massive humans colliding would snap a front-rower’s neck like a dry twig.

How do you even swing a sword while being squashed like that?

You didn't. In a true othismos, there was zero room for fancy swordplay or heroic lunges. You were basically a very angry sardine in a bronze can.

Most of the fighting was just short, overhand stabs with a spear, aiming for gaps in helmets or over shield rims. It was less like a duel and more like trying to poke someone while trapped in a mosh pit.

The real weapon was the collective weight. If your side stayed upright and the other side tripped or fainted from the pressure, you simply trampled them. Victory went to the sturdiest wall, not the best fencer.

So if someone trips, do their own friends just crush them?

Pretty much. Falling down wasn't just a mistake; it was a death sentence. Because the ranks behind were locked into the shove, they couldn't stop or even see you. You didn't just lose your spot; you became the pavement.

If the line buckled, the men behind would accidentally trample their own comrades to keep the wall steady. Most ancient deaths happened during this messy collapse, not from elegant spear work.

It’s why rugby refs kill the play the second a scrum collapses. When that much weight loses its structure, it turns from a game into an industrial accident in a heartbeat.

But without a referee, how did they ever stop the shoving?

There was no whistle. The 'stop' happened when the physics of the formation simply failed. One side would eventually reach their breaking point—from exhaustion or terror—and the wall would 'pop.'

Imagine a dam bursting. The moment the resistance vanished, the winners didn't keep pushing air; they broke formation to hunt down the survivors who were now fleeing in total panic.

Most of the actual killing happened during this 'rout.' The shoving was just the high-pressure buildup; the collapse was the lethal release.
