If you want the real heavyweight champion, look at Mauna Kea in Hawaii. While Everest peaks higher above sea level, Mauna Kea’s roots go all the way down to the dark, crushing floor of the Pacific Ocean.

It’s a volcanic skyscraper over 33,000 feet from its soggy basement to its snowy roof. Everest is basically just a tall guy standing on a very high chair.

Wait, how does a volcano build a 33,000-foot tower from the ocean floor?

So the retired islands just sit there forever, or do they eventually vanish?

They don’t just sit there; they’re on a one-way trip to Davy Jones’ locker. Without that magma 'IV drip' to keep them puffed up, the volcanic rock cools and contracts. The island literally starts sinking into the seafloor like a heavy person on a soft mattress.
