Instead, it uses heuristics. These are mental shortcuts, like my trick: if it’s near the top of the laundry basket and doesn't smell, it's clean. It’s a good enough rule that prevents a total cognitive meltdown.

We trade perfect accuracy for speed. It’s how you navigate a sidewalk without doing calculus. It’s a bit lazy, but it keeps life moving while the computers are still faffing with spreadsheets.

But doesn't 'good enough' lead to some pretty spectacular disasters?

Oh, absolutely. It’s like assuming every seaside shop sells decent ice cream just because they have a colorful sign. You end up with a watery mess because you didn't bother to check the reviews.

When these shortcuts misfire, we call them 'cognitive biases.' It’s your brain being a bit too smug, like sticking to a code snippet from 2005 because it worked once, even though the whole system is now screaming.

We see patterns where there aren't any or ignore red flags. It's the messy tax we pay for not spending all day faffing over which socks to wear.

Why on earth hasn't evolution deleted this buggy code by now?

Because evolution doesn't care about 'perfect accuracy'—it only cares if you stay alive. It’s like a cheap smoke alarm in a seaside rental.

If the alarm screams when you burn toast, it’s a nuisance. But if you 'fix' it to be less sensitive, you might sleep through the kitchen actually catching fire. Evolution prefers the false alarm.

We descend from the paranoid people who jumped at every rustle in the grass. The 'accurate' ones who faffed about to confirm it was a tiger didn't survive to pass on their genes.

Wait, if the tigers are gone, why is the smoke alarm still blaring?

That’s the 'legacy hardware' problem, dear. Evolution moves at the speed of a coastal tectonic plate, while our lifestyle changed in a digital blink. Your brain is running a security patch from the Stone Age on a 2024 operating system.

To your amygdala—that tiny, frantic bit of kit—a 'Read' receipt with no reply feels exactly like being abandoned by the tribe in a blizzard. It can't distinguish between a predator's growl and a passive-aggressive Slack message from your boss.

It’s like trying to run high-speed fiber through the rusty copper pipes of an old Victorian guesthouse. The hardware simply hasn't had the upgrade needed to handle modern 'noise.'

So are we just stuck with this glitchy, panicky software forever then?

You can't swap the copper pipes without tearing down the guesthouse, dear. Evolution doesn't have an 'Update Now' button for your DNA, so the hardware is here to stay.

But you can install 'middleware.' This is your prefrontal cortex—the sensible manager—stepping in to tell the amygdala that a 'Read' receipt isn't a death sentence.

It’s like putting blue-tack over a flashing 'Error' light. The sensor is still screaming, but you’ve trained yourself to ignore the faff and stay on course.
