We’ve reached a peak urban design comedy where a 4,000-pound metal box gets to hold a public sidewalk hostage. It’s the classic drive-thru "stacking" failure. The business wants the profit of a high-speed queue but refuses to pay for the land to actually hold those cars.
Instead, they just colonize the sidewalk. You, the pedestrian, are now an obstacle in a private transaction. It’s a literal physical manifestation of prioritizing "throughput" over people, turning a shared path into a temporary idling lot for caffeine addicts.
It’s the magic of "Level of Service" metrics. Traffic engineers treat cars like water in a pipe. If a line spills onto the main road, it’s a technical failure. But if it blocks a sidewalk? That usually doesn't show up on their spreadsheets.
Cities prioritize keeping the street clear at all costs. Since pedestrians don't have a "flow rate" that bureaucrats track, your walking path becomes a free overflow valve for the business's poor planning.
It’s essentially a zoning loophole. The "queue" isn't legally counted as "parking," so the business gets to dump its mess onto the public for free while the city looks the other way.
To a traffic engineer, a "successful" street is one where a massive SUV can cruise at 45mph without ever tapping the brakes. They use a grading system from A to F, but the only thing being graded is the patience of a driver at a red light.
If a thousand people are walking but one car has to wait ten seconds for them to cross, the street "fails." In their world, you aren't a human being with a destination; you're just "friction" slowing down the important stuff.

Engineers are essentially using a stopwatch to measure a marathon. They’re so obsessed with the speed of metal boxes they forget the goal is moving people, not machines.
Until we value humans over vehicle speed, we’ll just keep paving over everything to save a few seconds of idling.
