You’re part of a human river flowing toward the exit until you hit the ticket barriers. Suddenly, a three-lane highway of commuters tries to squeeze through a tiny gap, and the whole system chokes.

This is the bottleneck effect. As we pack tighter, we lose our "buffer space." One person fumbling for a phone creates a ripple of micro-delays that stalls everyone behind them.

Forcing a massive volume through a narrow opening spikes the pressure. In a station, that pressure doesn't move us faster; it just makes us late and incredibly grumpy.

How does that 'ripple' reach me if I'm way back in the queue?

It’s a classic phantom traffic jam. In a dense crowd, your movement isn't independent; it’s a chain reaction. You aren't watching the barrier; you're watching the shoulders of the person directly in front of you.

When they stop abruptly to find their ticket, you have to stop to avoid a collision. That delay—the time it takes for your brain to say 'stop' and your legs to obey—is passed backward and amplified with every person.

By the time that signal reaches you ten rows back, a two-second fumble has grown into a thirty-second standstill. The buffer space is gone, so the crowd has no way to 'soak up' the mistake.

Wait, so if we all just left more space, would the jam vanish?

In theory, absolutely. If everyone maintained a one-meter "buffer zone," you could absorb a neighbor's sudden stumble without ever having to stop your own feet. The ripple would simply run out of energy and vanish.

The problem is our collective anxiety. In a packed station, we treat every inch of open floor like gold. If you're "polite" enough to leave a gap, some frantic commuter will inevitably dive into it, thinking they’ve found a secret shortcut.

By closing those gaps to block the "queue jumpers," we accidentally weld ourselves into a single, rigid unit. We trade our individual shock absorbers for the feeling of being one inch closer to the train, making the whole crowd move like a rusty machine.

But surely closing the gap gets me through the gate a second faster?

It’s a total brain-scam. We confuse "position" with "velocity." By crawling up the person in front, you feel like you’re winning a tiny territory battle, but you haven't changed the gate's throughput.

Think of a funnel. You can cram as much sand as you want against the opening, but the hole only lets one grain through at a time. Hugging your neighbor just turns the sand into a solid, unmoving clump.

You’re trading your ability to react for a placebo. You feel faster because you’re "active," but you’ve actually just removed the lubrication that keeps the human machine moving.

Does being a 'clump' actually trick the gate into working slower?

Precisely. Every gate has a 'reset' time and needs a clear sensor signal. If you're tailgating, the machine might not detect a gap, causing the barrier to hesitate or stay shut as a safety precaution.

You also lose your 'prep time.' In a spaced-out line, your ticket is ready. In a clump, you’re too busy avoiding elbows to reach for your wallet until you're already at the sensor.

The gate ends up waiting for you. Those tiny 'dead air' pauses between passengers add up, effectively slashing the station's exit capacity.
