That slippery, translucent film coating the inside of your neti pot isn't just "old water." It’s a biological fortress called a biofilm—a microscopic city built by bacteria.

These microbes don't just sit there; they secrete a sticky "glue" made of sugars and proteins that anchors them to the plastic. This shield makes them incredibly hard to wash away with a simple rinse.

Every time you use it without a deep scrub, you’re essentially flushing your sinuses with water that’s been filtered through a bacterial apartment complex. It’s a direct highway for pathogens to move from the plastic into your head.

Wait, why doesn't a blast of hot water just melt that glue away?

Think of that slime as biological reinforced concrete. A quick rinse with hot water is basically just a spa day for them. The heat usually isn't intense enough to penetrate the deeper layers where the bacteria are hunkered down.

The sugar-protein mesh is specifically designed to be water-insoluble. To actually break it, you have to physically rip their "city" apart with a scrub brush or use harsh chemicals to dissolve the protein chains. Without that, you're just giving the survivors a warm bath.

So if I never scrub, does that slime just get thicker and thicker?
