NASA’s bureaucracy has zero chill for lunar eBay stores. When the stamps hit the market too early, these galactic heroes were grounded forever. It remains the most expensive "oops" in postal history.
It wasn't some high-tech laser mark. They literally packed a standard rubber stamp and a messy ink pad into the Lunar Module like they were working a weekend shift at a local post office.
On their final day on the surface, Commander Dave Scott spent his precious 'rest period' frantically thumping envelopes. Imagine trying to do precision paperwork while wearing pressurized gloves that turn your fingers into stiff, clumsy sausages.
They even had to worry about the ink behaving. In the low-pressure cabin, liquid ink can easily boil or smear, potentially turning their retirement fund into a bunch of useless, ink-stained trash.

Graphite is highly conductive. A stray shard could land on a circuit board and trigger the exact short circuit they were terrified of. You’d go from writing a postcard to losing your life support because of a "2B" lead fragment.

The Space Pen used a pressurized cartridge to force out a special gel-like ink. It worked in zero-G and extreme temperatures without ever turning into a messy ink volcano or leaking into the ship's sensitive electronics.
NASA didn't even invent it; a private citizen spent a million dollars developing it on his own. NASA just bought them off the shelf, finally making space-paperwork a boring task instead of a life-threatening gamble.
