Forget the "triumph of the human spirit." The 1904 Olympic marathon was basically a slow-motion car crash fueled by rat poison and hard liquor.

When runner Thomas Hicks began to collapse, his trainers didn't give him water. Instead, they pumped him full of strychnine and brandy. In tiny doses, that poison acts like a violent nervous system stimulant, forcing muscles to twitch and fire even when the body is literally shutting down.

Hicks crossed the finish line hallucinating and gray-faced, being physically carried by his coaches. It wasn't a legendary athletic feat; it was a terrifying, state-sponsored chemistry experiment that nearly killed the winner.

It wasn't an accident; it was a deliberate, sadistic experiment. James Sullivan, the chief organizer, wanted to test the limits of "purposeful dehydration." He actually believed that drinking water during a race was a sign of weakness that caused "internal cramping."

Not even close. Sullivan’s oversight meant runners were essentially trespassing on a normal workday, weaving through delivery wagons and locals heading to the market.

It got ridiculous when Len Taunyane was chased over a mile off-course by a pack of angry stray dogs. He didn't lose time to exhaustion—he was sprinting for his life in the wrong direction.

The "course" was just a suggestion. St. Louis's daily chaos was treated as just another unscripted hazard for the runners to survive.
